James Bonas is an acclaimed director of opera, theatre, and dance who has worked across Europe and the United States with companies including Opéra National de Lyon, Opéra National du Rhin (where he won the French National Critics Award in 2022 for The Snow Queen), English National Opera, the National Theatre, Welsh National Opera, Scottish Ballet (winner of the UK Theatre Award for The Crucible in 2019), San Francisco Symphony, Cincinnati Symphony, the BBC Proms, Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, Bergen National Opera, and Theater Magdeburg.

His film work has been presented at the Venice Biennale 2021 and earned the Jury Prize at Cinedans International 2022.

Upcoming projects include new creations for Opéra Comique in Paris, Canadian National Ballet, Dutch National Ballet, Opera North, and American Ballet Theatre at Lincoln Center.

Recent works include Bernstein’s Candide for Welsh National Opera and Ariadne auf Naxos for Theater Magdeburg in Germany.
